Korea's largest artificial lake was created in 1985 when the Chungju Dam flooded the South Han River valley, submerging entire villages. Locals who grew up nearby can point to where their grandparents' houses went under. The cruise between Chungju and Danyang takes about an hour and passes through a landscape of flooded peninsulas and limestone cliffs that feels unlike anywhere else in Korea. The boat goes through the Oksunbong gorge section where the cliffs narrow — that stretch alone is worth the fare. Ask older crew members about the underwater village; some will talk, some won't.
