Taebaek in Gangwon-do was the centre of Korea's coal mining industry from the 1960s through the 1980s and the Coal Museum preserves the physical evidence of that industry — mine shaft reconstruction, mining equipment, and the social history of the mining community that supported Korea's industrialisation. The Taebaeksan Provincial Park above the town provides high-altitude hiking through a mountain environment that is snowbound for several months and strikingly different from the lowland Gangwon landscape. The combination of the industrial heritage and the mountain wilderness immediately above gives Taebaek a layered character unusual in Korean provincial towns.
