Chiaksan National Park in Wonju, Gangwon-do, rises to 1,288 metres at Birobong peak through one of the steeper sustained ascent routes in the Korean national park system. The northeast ridge trail from Guryongsa Temple is the classic approach — 3.5 kilometres gaining 1,100 metres of elevation through mixed hardwood and fir forest. The rocky summit gives views over the Wonju basin and toward the Sobaek range to the south. The Guryongsa Temple at the base of the trail is a Silla-period foundation with the dramatic Seongnammun gate standing independently in the ravine. Autumn colour on the trail — typically at peak in mid-October — is among the most intense in the Gangwon interior.
