Yeongdong produces around 60% of Korea's domestic grape harvest, a fact almost nobody outside the region knows. The wine village near Yeongdong town has about a dozen small-scale wineries operating out of facilities that range from serious to charmingly ramshackle. The grape varietals are largely Campbell Early and Muscat Bailey A — not international trophy winners but interesting as Korean agricultural products. The annual Yeongdong Wine and Jazz Festival in October is disproportionately good for a county town of 50,000 people; the blues and jazz scene here has deep roots that locals attribute to American military influence in the postwar decades.
