The Donggang River through Yeongwol in Gangwon-do provides the most technical whitewater rafting in Korea on a naturally flowing river — the class 3-4 rapids through the Jeongseok limestone gorge give a full-day rafting experience that is qualitatively different from the class 2 Naerin River operations in Inje. The Donggang valley was the subject of a significant conservation campaign in the 1990s that stopped a planned dam and preserved the river's natural flow character. The river cut through the limestone mountains creates vertical cliff walls and cave formations visible from the water surface. The surrounding Yeongwol area holds Cheongnyeongpo and the Yeongwol Astronomy Village for full-area accommodation.
