The wide pedestrianised plaza at the front of Gyeongbokgung Palace, reopened in its expanded form in 2022 after a two-year reconstruction that doubled its width. The Admiral Yi Sun-sin and King Sejong statues anchor the north and south ends respectively — both are obligatory photo stops. The plaza hosts major public events including national holidays, concerts, and protest gatherings. Underground is Sejong Story and Haetae Story, free permanent exhibitions on Korean culture and the Joseon kings. The plaza connects directly south to Seoul City Hall and north to Gyeongbokgung, making it the natural spine of a walking tour of central Seoul.
