Naksan Beach immediately below the temple cliff is one of the primary East Sea sunrise beaches, with a clean eastern exposure and a wide sand beach that draws photographers and early risers from across the region on clear mornings. The timing of the East Sea sunrise — earlier than Seoul by about 20 minutes at the summer solstice — is worth calculating for any visit. The beach is less crowded than the Gangneung beaches further south and the combination of the temple cliff on the northern end, the pine forests backing the beach, and the open sea gives it a more contained and complete character than the broader Gangneung beach zone.
