The Alpensia resort area developed for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics sits at 700 metres elevation in the Daegwallyeong highland plateau, and the post-Olympic period has given the area a quieter, more accessible character than the commercial ski resort atmosphere suggests. The highland plateau landscape — open meadows at altitude above the treeline that are uncommon in Korean terrain — gives the area a visual quality distinct from lowland Gangwon-do. The Olympic Museum within the Alpensia complex documents the 2018 Games. The drive across the Daegwallyeong Pass from Gangneung is one of the most dramatic road sequences in Korea; the highland plateau restaurant strip below the pass serves the buckwheat dishes specific to the altitude.
