One of the oldest documented hot spring resorts in Korea — records from the Goryeo dynasty mention its waters — Suanbo has the faded charm of a place that was fashionable before Koreans discovered beach holidays. The spring water is alkaline bicarbonate at 53°C, considered particularly good for skin, and the old-school jjimjilbang culture here feels more authentic than anything you'd find in Seoul. The town itself is a time capsule of 1980s Korean resort architecture: not pretty, but honest. Locals treat it as a budget off-season retreat. Foreign travelers who find it tend to have the bathing facilities largely to themselves.
