Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival Village

📍 Hwacheon, Gangwon-do

A small mountain valley town that hosts the largest ice festival in Asia each January when the river freezes thick enough to drill hundreds of ice fishing holes. The main event is catching mountain trout (sancheoneo) through holes in the ice. Tent villages spring up along the frozen river. Between December and February the valley is transformed entirely by the festival infrastructure.
