Danyang Sobaeksan Astronomical Observatory

📍 Sobaeksan-ro 2182, Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do

Perched at 850 meters on the slopes of Sobaeksan, the national observatory here was established in 1978 partly because this inland mountain location offers unusually low light pollution and atmospheric humidity compared to coastal sites. It's not a major tourist facility — that's precisely what makes it worth visiting. On clear nights the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye, and the organized public observation sessions (check schedules in advance) use research-grade telescopes. The drive up through the Sobaeksan valleys in the dark, with the observatory lights appearing above the treeline, is its own kind of experience. The surrounding Sobaeksan National Park has excellent azalea blooms in late April.
